Trümmer, Models, Zwillinge, Einkaufswägen, Kakophonien, Skulpturbegrifflichkeit in space and time: the show must go on.

From this terms diploma projects, Incubus by Roman Vogl is my personal favourite. Its an insanely well crafted apparatus that deforms a fragile organic object suspended on strings inside a metal cubus based on the movement of the users arm and fingers in the attached data glove.

Last years Essence, the annual exhibition of the most important works by students from all departments of our university, had another work of Roman Vogl, the 3D Particle Display (pdf).

The device is made from 247 acrylic cubes that contain tiny styrofoam globules. Through a custom software controlled pneumatic system, compressed air can be blown into each cube in order to display a three dimensional object.

Damien Di Fede makes algorithmic music and “organization makes him feel warm and fuzzy inside”. I found primes.mp3 and bubble_sort.mp3 the most remarkable pieces on his website. Primes harsh rhythm feels like a stuttering rap vocal and makes me wonder why MC Plus+ does not also use a process that truly reflects his roots, even if they are square. And Bubble Sort is far more then just a sonification of the infamous sorting algorithm, but sounds like a backwards and 2006ish version of Alvin Luciers I am sitting in a room (UBUWEB has an mp3).

During a romantic trip down the music memory lane with A he pointed me to Artist and Composer Mark Kostabi, whom I have never heard of before.

Some notable excerpts from his biography:

“Kostabi produces a weekly cable TV show, Name That Painting, where noted art critics compete to title his paintings for cash awards.”

“Kostabi has designed album covers for Guns ‘N’ Roses (Use Your Illusion) and The Ramones (Adios Amigos) and numerous products including a Swatch watch, limited-edition vases, espresso cups, computer accessories and a Giro d’Italia pink jersey.”

“He writes an advice column for artists, Ask Mark Kostabi, for Artnet.com.”

from his column:

“I, Mark Kostabi, am a famous artist. I make millions. But I frequently see debut shows of unknown artists with prices that are double of mine. With a lot of effort they might even sell some work. But what they’re really doing is barely getting by and helping me sell 1,000 paintings a year effortlessly, because they make my paintings look like such a bargain. Thank you to all the egotistical art students!”

and his website

“The famous oil on canvas, “Automatic Painting“, just sold for $25,000.00. to J. Allard, a frequent eBay customer. $25,000.00 represents a new record for a 48 x 36 inch Kostabi painting. The highest publically known price paid for a Kostabi painting to date to date is $60,000.00 for “Gravity Fuels The Rocket To Inner Space” 1985, oil and enamel on canvas, 70 x 46 inches”

Beside this autopromotion, one reads about him that:

The lasting legacy of Kostabi is the death of the avant garde as a political tool in America.
(associatedcontent.com)

And about the famous Electroboy vs. Kostabi incindent:

“In the late eighties, he took on as a client the Milli Vanili of the visual artists, Mark Kostabi. Kostabi ran a downtown sweatshop that conceived and produced all his works for him. All he added to the product were his initials, which he openly bragged about. The combination of Kostabi’s sense of the outrageous and Andy’s PR and sales smarts resulted in a dream team that struck it rich among the suckers looking for the next Schnabel or Basquiat. Then in the early nineties, with the aid of one of Kostabi’s sweatshop employees, Andy began selling fake Kostabis, or, more accurately, fakes of fakes. When the scheme was unmasked, Kostabi offered to authenticate the fakes of the fakes.” (mcmanweb.com)

The airbots are giant helium-filled, silver balloons that move through the air with grace and ease. Simon Faithfull: Escape Vehicle no.6

“Escape Vehicle no.6 started as a live event developed from the previous balloon film 30km. The live audience first witnessed the launching of a weather balloon with a domestic chair dangling in space beneath it. Once the apparatus had dissapeared into the sky they then watched a live video relay from the weather balloon as it jouneyed from the ground to the edge of space (30km up). “

For the time being we got an artwork by friend and painter Alexander Waltner for our new apartment on loan. For me its the first time that I have the pleasure to live with such a spacious and beautiful piece of art. The untitled artwork is one of his more recent mixed-media collages and had to be assembled after it was delivered to our home. Here is the step by step guide on how we did it:

Step 0: Requirements
- A drill and some bolts (A standard screwdriver will do it too)

- Some kind of reference on how it looks when completed (In this case we used an exhibition catalogue)

- And of course the single parts of the artwork, which we are going to assemble in the forthcoming steps.

Step 1: Attaching the parts
We screw on the first part, using the supplied screws and the drill.

After completing this step, it looks like this:

Step 2: Attaching more parts
We add the second part to the bottom of the artwork, again using the supplied screws and the drill:

This part serves as the base to another freestanding part, this is how it looks when finished:

Step 3: Drilling holes
To hang the artwork onto the wall, we have to drill two holes into the wall.

After drilling the first one, we accurately measure the distance between the hole and the floor, in order to drill the second hole at exactly the same height.

We do not fully countersink the screws into the wall, because the artworks frame structure has to rest on the protruding screw.

Step 4: Add the last part, which itself is hanging on the frame

Step 5: We hang the artwork on the wall.

Finished!

In this case that means that her almost white photographs are counted to, but not visible in the group pool. Should this be seen as a decision by Flickr that represents their appreciation of non depictive photography or outsider art?

Last weekend I attended a workshop entitled “Human Interface Design”, held by Thomas Exner. We didn’t exactly design any interfaces, but rather lamps, focussed on LED and similar illuminants. You can take a look at the results here and here.

While the others were busy tinkering on their partly quite complex designs, I created 4 lamps with a quick, dirty and rather conceptual approach:

“Bright Ideas”
After sketching and instantly discarding some ideas I had in the beginning, a pile of paper arose, which I illuminated with some cheap fairy lights.

“Out Of The Box”
Desperately searching for a more simple solution, I wished for an out of the box solution for creative lamp design, and found one.

“A4″ and “A3″
Being not quite satisfied with the usabilty of the lamps I did before, I came up with this series of reading and work lights.

Reflecting about my and everyone else’s current practice in the construction of websites and the use of RSS.

Until now I have only seen websites that offer hierarchical, chronologically sorted content, also offer an RSS feed to integrate the information into other pages or for subscription with a personal RSS feed reader.

But the same technology that, for example, helps me to easily keep track of updates to my favorite weblogs would also allow me to construct a website that is as non hierarchical as a website can get, while still being perfectly accessible to anyone that is not interested in the presentation framework or visual representation of the content, but only the information itself.

The implementation comes to perfection when using Apples Safari browser. If the user finds my presentation too distracting, he could simply click on the shiny blue RSS button within the URI bar to see the hierarchical representation of my website within the same application.

I am not sure if this idea has either been overlooked by website designers until now or if I just never stumbled upon such a site. In the past, declared authors of net.art or rabid commercial designers have produced many examples of eccentric websites that left the alleged safe path to effectual mediation. Today, the most widely accepted practice to publish content on the web is setting up a weblog, customizing the look and feel as far as the application allows it and start publishing immediately, just like I did numerous times, including on this very page you are reading.

Today, I think that time and technology are ready to mash up these two methods. Putting a little more reflective and constructive effort into the architecture of a site, one could produce a website with a real signature. I at least would welcome seeing less sites with the same “sort by date posted” kind of layout, and more individual presentations, free from backend-bound indifference.
